In 2000, the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (CETAM) was inaugurated to train students and professionals in the most advanced technologies for manufacturing and automation. This center laid the foundations for the creation of the Mechatronics Engineering program. In 2008, the University Assembly approved the creation of the Mechatronics Engineering career in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, indicating the start of the program for 2009. From the beginning, the program contemplated the support in infrastructure and teaching staff of the Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Engineering programs, mainly. Also, the program's own laboratories were built in the CETAM building. In 2010, the Program Management Committee was formed with the purpose of supporting the authorities of the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Department of Engineering in the generation of synergies between Mechatronics Engineering and other related specialties. At the end of 2021, given the growth of the program, the University Assembly approved the creation of the Mechatronics Engineering Section, attached to the Department of Engineering, with the aim of ensuring that the necessary resources (institutional services, financial support and personnel) are adequate to meet the needs of the program.
